Every Thursday 8:30pm - 12:30am is Open Mic Night at DAHLAK in Adams Morgan.
All types of music are welcome as long as you or someone else can play it. No pre-recorded
backing tracks will be played. Non-musical acts may be welcome, but I would email befor
ehand so I can
give you a feel for how I think it might go over. Doing stand up sandwiched between two musical acts
requires a less than subtle approach. Poets might want to wax elsewhere, but you never know.
Sign up starts at 8pm. The address is 1717 U St. NW DC 20009. Tel. 202-332-2110.
Good bottled beer (Stella!, etc.) is $4 all night long.
That's really all you need to know, but forge ahead if you want to get technical and oh so philosophical.
As is the case with most Open Mics, the music tends to be acoustically oriented, but I want to
encourage those of you with other talents to participate. I will have an amp on hand for electric
guitar players, and I should have a bass amp on hand as well, but please email me beforehand to
verify that. A drum set may also be on site, but drummers should email me directly, as I may not
bring it every week. There will always be an extra acoustic guitar on hand as well as a hand drum.
Tambourine, anyone?
I hope instrumentalists of every kind will feel free to come by as sit-ins are always a welcome addition.
Musicians are always free to join me onstage and I encourage all performers to mix it up with other
willing musicians. Bands are welcome, but please email me beforehand so I can give you a specific time
and know your PA requirements. Along with the aforementioned equipment, I will always have at least
3 mics set up and can swing a 4th if necessary.
SONGWRITERS: I will be offering a couple of Showcase Slots each week for songwriters who want to do
an extended set of 20-30 mins. If you would like to have one of these pre-arranged slots then please
email me with a link to your material.
OUT OF TOWNERS: Bring it...I'll hook you up with a guitar in case yours didn't fit in the overhead.
WHINERS: No need for hard feelings...please tell me how I have offended thee, and I will try to make it right.
I've been trying off and on for almost two decades to make these things work, and I realize there are going
to be unhappy campers (been there). However, please don't go off in a huff if I make you wait too long or
don't give you a long enough set. Please make your complaint known and let's work on a solution.
That being said....this is not a democracy. There are plenty of Open Mics that operate on the everybody
gets two songs and let's move on principle. While I try to keep it as fair as possible, I believe in a meritocracy.
Sorry, but the performer with the screaming fans in tow, or the screaming licks, or the velvet voice, or the
knockout Velvet Underground cover, whatever, may just get more time than you. I am grateful to all who come out
and participate, but in the end I am responsible to all the patrons in the joint, and most importantly the owner.
It's all about the alcohol...me...I like beer. Please come join us...

This year all of our Coffee Houses are focused on benefitting children and youth. The coffee house scheduled for Friday, Feb. 3 will focus specifically on this summer's Peace Camp. If you feel like singing a song, telling a good joke, reciting some poet
ry, performing a dramatic reading or sharing any other creative talent, great or small, this would be a great time to do it. The main purpose of the coffee house evenings is to have fun and while we have fun we also try to raise a little money for some worthy causes. Come and participate as a performer or enjoy and encourage others as an audience member. There are no charges for admission, snacks or beverages, but donations for Peace Camp scholarships will be gratefully appreciated.

Musicians! Looking to perform your music on a Tuesday night? Look no further than Ireland's Four Courts where we're running a great open mic every Tuesday starting at 8pm. All styles of music are welcome and a sound system is provided for you! You'll
be able to play for at least 15 minutes to up to 30 minutes or so depending on how many acts come out that night.
We have two sign up periods. One from 8-9pm and the other from 10-11pm. From 9-10pm there will be a featured artist weekly.
The stage can fit up to three people and we cannot have a drummer. Two microphones are provided as are cords to plug in your instrument (guitar, keyboard, etc).
Ireland's Four Courts is located at 2051 Wilson Blvd across from the Courthouse Metro stop (orange line). We've had some great nights and lively crowds, so it's been very fun above all!

This is a music open mic every Tuesday night at the Front Page in the Ballston area of Arlington, right near the Ballston Metro and Mall. Great local pub, all kinds of music welcome (9:00-midnight). Bar age is 21 and up. Usually acts get 3-4 songs each

Very laid back atmosphere, and though the folks hanging out at the bar don't always focus on the music, it's a good place to work on songs, and sometimes acts can indeed draw some ears.
